Gifts & Things

One stitch, two stitch, pink stitch, blue stitch

I’m the luckiest girl ever. I had a birthday at the end of October and received tons of knitting gifts from my lovely family and friends. These are stitch markers that Guy made for me. He remembered the instructions I’d found months ago, picked out beads, and made twelve matching markers and one contrasting marker. I’ve already used them on Alex’s hat, seen here, and on a lace scarf.

Guy also gave me a great knitting bag with all kinds of pockets and whatnot. Mom and Dad gave me Vogue Knitting: The Ultimate Knitting Book and The Knitter’s Book of Finishing Techniques, both fantastic books. Chris and Heather sent Knitting for Peace and some yummy pink and orange yarn, along with a box of other fun stuff. I got a gift certificate to Hill Country Weavers from Eric, which I’ve already spent on a Della Q bag, when I really should have spent it on needles. And Lee gave me a knitted pink and orange striped hat whose corners look like little ears, from Etsy.

Who needs Christmas now? I’ve got everything I could ever need, along with a wonderful group of people who love me. (And give really great gifts!)

Thank you!

Mr. Bigglesworth

This is the very chunky magenta and orange chenielle yarn that Guy gave me for Christmas. Actually, he gave it to me before Christmas, on the day of a huge Web site launch at work. He wanted me to have something with me to make me happy, to get through all of the stress and shennanigans.

The yarn was still in a shank, and it sat on my lap through most of the 12-hour day. Whenever I got stressed I’d stroke the yarn and I’d feel much better. If anyone else came to my desk freaking out, I’d hand them the yarn and they’d pet it and feel better. This is how it became known as Mr. Bigglesworth.

I wanted to make something out of it that would retain that same feel. I wanted it to be something you could hold in your lap and pet, without literally making it into a cat. So I bought one of those super squishy little pillows stuffed with tiny foam pellets, and I’m going to crochet a cover for it.

And it just might end up with nice fat tassles for the corners.

Turbo

I had a lovely dash to the yarn store today at lunch to get all my school supplies for the class I’m taking. It starts Wednesday and goes for six weeks, one session per week. It’s the Beyond the Basics Class at Hill Country Weavers.

The class project is a funky little sampler purse that I’ll be doing in rust orange wool. It may never see the light of day once it’s finished, but it’ll be a nice chance to learn cables and new fundamental techniques (whatever those are).

Most exciting, though, are the new needles I bought. I’m hoping I actually need them (I forgot to check to see if I already have the sizes required for the class) and get to keep them, because they’re the Addi Turbo Circular needles. So shiny! So slick! So German!!! The joints are supposed to be snag-free, and the slick metal finish is supposed to make you a super fast knitting freak. Finally!!!

Schöner stricken!
